Commerce Township Geography and Pests

Commerce Township Welcome SignCommerce Township is a charter township in Oakland County in the suburban area surrounding Detroit. The township is 29.8 square miles in area, of which 2.3 square miles is water. The township consists of flat farmlands, much of which has been developed into suburban home lots and some rolling hills. The township is bisected by the Huron River which runs north to south. It was once primarily a vacation area for Detroit residents, but the summer cottages have almost all been converted to year-round homes.

The area includes several small lakes near which several golf courses have been built. The Proud Lake State Recreation Area is located primarily within the township. This 4,700-acre recreation area offers hiking trails, fishing, canoeing, and picnicking in the summertime, and cross-country skiing in winter.

As is often the case in wooded recreational areas that surround bodies of water, mosquitoes are a common summertime pest. These bugs used to be primarily considered a nuisance, but now carry many deadly diseases so they are more of a cause for concern. A Commerce Township pest control company can help rid your home and yard of these dangerous creatures. We offer a 5 treatment plan just for mosquitoes that gives your home complete coverage for all of mosquito season. If you’re worried about mosquitoes give us a call and we’ll tell you all about it!

Boxelder bugs are also often found in Commerce Township and the surrounding area. These bugs can be identified by their distinctive red and black markings and by the red stain they leave when they are squished. Uncommonly strong, boxelder bugs can force their way into your home through the window seals. They like to be in the sun, and will sometimes swarm an area in large numbers, then suddenly disappear, only to reappear a short time later.

Commerce Township History and Pests

Commerce Township was first settled in 1825 when Abram Walrod built a small settlement on the banks of the Huron River. The area is now known as the Byers Homestead. The town was named ‘Commerce’ by subsequent settlers in the hope that It would encourage economic activity. Their effort was rewarded as the town became a stop on the stagecoach path from Pontiac to Milford, as drivers had to weave their way around several lakes during the journey.

The area underwent development in the 1800s, and the population grew and more businesses opened in town. The Grand Commerce Inn was built in 1883 and still operates as an inn to this day.

Well-known residents of Commerce Township include William J. McConnell, Senator and Governor of Idaho in the 1890s; Joseph B. Boor, Michigan Supreme Court Justice at the turn of the 20th century; and Connor Hellebuyck, goaltender for the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

Both antique and newer homes in Commerce Township are susceptible to one of the most upsetting pests you’ll find–mice. They can squeeze into your home through the smallest of openings, especially as the fall days start to turn cooler. Once they get inside, they reproduce very quickly so a few mice can turn into a lot more very quickly!

Carpenter ants are another pest that is common to Commerce Township. These big, black ants like to chew on damp or old wood, although they don’t eat wood like termites do. You may see them around your outdoor deck or patio, or inside your home in the kitchen or bathrooms. A Commerce Township exterminator can permanently get rid of them for you.

As a local company, we are very experienced with eradicating mosquitoes, boxelder bugs, mice, carpenter ants, and more from Commerce Township homes. For these or any other pests you’re seeing, give us a call and we’ll take care of your pest issue quickly and professionally!
