I was not home when the technician was here to do our last treatment, however, so far have seen a big difference in spiders and bugs in the house, especially in our lower walkout. Happy so far with the company and hope we see no ants in the house this spring!

Highland Charter Township, MI, History and Pests

Highland was organized as a separate township in 1835. It was called Highland because of its high geographic location. It was then the highest land among all other settled parts of Michigan. According to information published by the Highland Historical Society, there were a few incidents connecting Native Americans with the Highland area. These tribes existed within the limits of the township. They had many nature trails here, but all of them were eventually replaced by roads, houses, and commercial spaces.

A man named Naham Curtis was the first to purchase land in this area. He traveled from Pennsylvania to Michigan in 1824. He had a large family, and his children were grown up by the time he moved to Highland. Curtis eventually sold his property and joined a Mormon community.

The township opened its first saw mill in 1846, but it was completely destroyed in a fire in 1863. They also had a flour mill in 1856. However, since the Highland Township was primarily an agricultural region, there wasn’t much of a manufacturing industry.

With the arrival of the railroad, the economic output of this region grew. Townspeople used the railroad to transport lumber and export pickles that were made locally.

Today, the Highland Township is known primarily for wonderful lakes, natural surroundings, and recreational areas. Yet the perennial pest problem is a primary concern.
