Royal Oak Geography and Pests

Royal Oak Welcome SignRoyal Oak is a suburb of Detroit and is 11.79 square miles in area. The Red Run River once ran through the town but was filled in during the 1930s. The city has been named ‘Tree City USA’ by the National Arbor Day Foundation every year since 1976 in recognition of the area’s commitment to conservation and tree planting.

The city’s central shopping district was transformed in the 2000s into an upscale shopping, restaurant, and entertainment district.

Well-known residents of Royal Oak include Glenn Frey, a founding member of the band The Eagles; Jack Kevorkian, a practitioner of physician-assisted suicide; and Peter Dawkins, winner of the 1958 Heisman Trophy in college football. Detroit-area resident and Saturday Night Live comedienne Gilda Radner started a foundation called the Gilda Radner Hereditary Cancer Program, which led to a free cancer support community for those with cancer, their friends, and families. There is a three-story non-residential house in Royal Oak called Gilda’s Club that provides social and emotional support for those with cancer.

One of the most common pests in the Royal Oak area is carpenter ants, which are often found near damp, old wood. Unlike termites, these ‘big, black ants’ don’t eat wood like termites do, but they will chew on it. If they get inside your home, you will often find them in the kitchen or bathrooms.

As the weather turns cooler in the fall, mice will try to squeeze into your home through the smallest of openings. Once inside, they can reproduce rapidly, and they don’t like to leave! If you’re looking for a Royal Oak pest control company to rid your home of these annoying pests or any others you’re seeing, simply contact us today!

Royal Oak History and Pests

In 1891 Royal Oak was incorporated as a village. Thirty years later, in 1921 it was incorporated as a city. In the 1930s, the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica Catholic Church was built in Royal Oak. This lavish Art Deco structure, located at 2100 West Twelve Mile Road is a city landmark and a parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. Fr. Charles Coughlin broadcast his radio ministry from the church’s tower during the 1930s. Fr. Coughlin’s preaching became increasingly anti-Semitic, and eventually, his ministry was shut down by the Roosevelt administration.

The city saw a surge in expansion beginning in the late 1990s, and the downtown area became a popular nightspot, with an increase in condominiums and loft apartments. A popular attraction is the Royal Oak Farmers Market, which opened in 1924 as a truck market. The current building, opened in 1927, is adjacent to the 44th District Court at the corner of Troy Street and 11 Mile Road.
