novi

There is much to love about Novi, Michigan.  Novi has great schools and communities. It has numerous places to shop and eat. It has beautiful homes and scenery.  It is a safe and fun place to live.  Novi is not only one of the best cities in Oakland County, it is one of the best in all of Michigan-that is a scientific fact.  Well, science may not have anything to do with it but anyone who has visited Novi knows that it really does not get much better.

Lakes, trees and vegetation contribute to Novi’s unmatched beauty.  However, inherent in such a natural backdrop are critters.  In this post, I will identify and discuss three of the most common pests that infest Novi homes, as well as those in other parts of southeastern Michigan.

While it is typical for pests to invade general areas, it is still possible for one home to have a certain pest problem, while the house next door has a pest problem that is altogether different.  Therefore, as a Novi homeowner, even though you will not likely have all three pest problems that will be discussed herein, it is almost certain that at least one of them is causing, or has caused you, an unneeded headache.  The pests most prevalent in Novi neighborhoods are carpenter ants, wasps, and spiders.

Carpenter Ants in Novi, Michigan

Carpenter ants are large, shiny black ants.  As such, they are fairly easy to identify.  While carpenter ants vary in size, they can grow as large as 1/2″ to 3/4″.  Carpenter ants nest in moist, hollowed-out wood.  They thrive in tree trunks and decks where a nest has been created for them either naturally, or by another pest.  One of the reasons that carpenter ants thrive in Novi is because of the numerous wooded areas that it has to offer.  Carpenter ants readily infest trees in Novi because of the natural harborage such trees afford.  As a result, homes with numerous trees in the backyard or on other parts of the property are susceptible to a carpenter ant infestation.  If you have decaying or dead trees or logs around your home, it is critical that you remove them so as to eliminate natural nesting areas for carpenter ants.

It is common for carpenter ants to maintain a central colony or nest on the outside of the home while infesting the home with satellite colonies.  Furthermore, attempting to resolve a carpenter ant problem without professional help is a quick way to encourage carpenter ants to create more satellite colonies.

Contrary what some believe, carpenter ants do not eat wood.  Carpenter ants will, however, chew through wood and spit it out as frass.  Therefore, while carpenter ants will not destroy the wood structuring of a home quite as fast as termites, we want to make sure that Novi homes are free from any potential wood-destroying pests.

Wasps in Novi, Michigan

Wasps come in many sizes and shapes.  Paper wasps, yellow jackets, and even bald faced hornets (which is actually a wasp) are common pests in Novi neighborhoods.  Wasps, as opposed to bees, are naturally aggressive (some more than others) and can sting a victim multiple times without dying.  Thus, it is best to keep homes free from wasps.

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps receive their name from their tendency to chew wood and other resources into a papery pulp. It is common, especially in early spring, for small umbrella-shaped paper nests to begin popping up in under the eves of homes in Novi.

Yellow Jackets

Yellow Jackets can be found nesting both above and below the ground in Oakland county.  They two nesting strategies-aerial and underground-are the result of varying weather and food supplies.  Yellow jackets change their diet from proteins to sugars throughout the summer.  This is why yellow jackets are commonly seen around Novi garbage cans in late summer and early fall.  If you see them, try not to threaten or intimate them.  If you do, it is possible, indeed likely, that the yellow jackets will attack.

Bald Faced Hornets

Bald faced hornets are among the most aggressive flying, stinging insects found in Novi.  They are easily identified because of their black and white striped bodies and head.  Bald faced hornet nests are also simple to spot.  Their nests are large, inverted teardrop-shaped nests that readily appear in residential neighborhoods.  Because of the serious potential for harm in dealing with bald faced hornets, it is recommended that you contact a pest control specialist to assist in removing a bald faced hornet nest.

Spiders in Novi, Michigan

Ahhhhh spiders!  Aside from a few weirdos, no one really likes having spiders around.  And why is that? Well, for starters, spiders have fangs that inject venom into their victims.  That does not sound like the type of houseguest that Novi residents like sleeping over.

Spiders are on every continent except Antartica and they can thrive in numerous habitats.  In their “Novi habitat,”  they are common basement invaders and spin many a web in Novi homes.  Despite my best efforts to explain to Novi homeowners that spiders are natural predators who help with insect control, it is usually requested that I get them out.  To tell you the truth, I do not blame them.  Spiders are just creepy.   That alone is reason enough for their eradication.

There you have it.  The three most common pests in Novi, Michigan.  Of the three, carpenter ants are the most difficult to treat, wasps are the most likely to inflict bodily harm and spiders causes the biggest messes (with their webs).
