pests we commonly see in ann arbor
Thanks to our many beautiful parks and trees, Ann Arbor is a popular place
for pests. Some of the most common pests we encounter include Indian meal
moths, Norway rats, and termites.
Common types of pests we treat in Ann Arbor include:
Carpenter ant control in ann arbor
Carpenter ants are known for chewing through wood to build their elaborate
nests. Many people believe that these ants eat wood, but they actually
just tunnel through it and chew on it in order to break away pieces needed
for their nests.
In order to avoid structural damage to your home, there are a few things
you can do to prevent carpenter ant infestations.
These include:
-
Eliminate non-essential water sources in your yard and home
-
Trim trees and shrubs to keep them away from the home
-
Seal any cracks or openings around doors and windows
-
Store piles of wood away from the home
Because they prefer wood that is softened by moisture or fungus, it is
best to monitor the wood surrounding your home and remove it if it is
damp or coated in fungus.
ann arbor rat control
Rats are one of the most dreaded pests around. With the ability to squeeze
through a hole as small as the size of a quarter and chew through glass,
cinderblock, wire, and aluminum, rats have no problem making their way
into homes.
They can potentially wreak tons of havoc on a home by:
-
Contaminating food by eating it, urinating on it, and leaving droppings on it
-
Spreading diseases and bacteria throughout a home
In order to keep these pests away, seal any holes or cracks along the foundation
of your home, store food in airtight containers, keep your home clean,
and keep all storage areas dry and clean.
ann arbor indian meal moth control
Indian meal moths are typically found anywhere food is stored, especially
grain and milled cereal products. Kitchens, restaurants, and cafeterias
are common places we encounter Indian meal moths.
The adult moth is about one-half of an inch long with reddish-brown wingtips.
Female moths lay 100 to 300 eggs on food material, which hatch into very
small caterpillars that are voracious eaters. When mature, the caterpillars
are about one-half of an inch long and may have a greenish or pinkish
hue. Mature larvae are often seen crawling about on walls and ceilings,
searching for places to spin a cocoon.
norway rat control in ann arbor
Often seen in the fall and winter, Norway
rats are commonly found in basements and ground floors in both homes and commercial
properties. Unlike roof rats, they like to burrow along building foundations,
beneath waste or woodpiles, and in moist areas in and around gardens and fields.
In some cases of extreme, untreated infestations, Norway rats can undermine
building foundations and concrete slabs with their burrowing activities.
They damage all kinds of materials—including metals, such as copper
and lead, and softer materials, such as plastic and wood—by gnawing
away at them.
